Celebrating the Opening of the Meg Smith Pharmacy in Temperance!

On Friday, February 24th, we had a very special visitor – Meg Smith! Meg is one of our Founding Board members and whom the new Temperance Pharmacy is named after. She served on the FMC Board for over 30 years and held the office of Vice President for over 20 of them.

When Ms. Smith retired from Bedford Business Association, she was showered all day at the office with well-wishers, gifts and even received a proclamation signed by then Gov. Rick Snyder, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, Sen. Dale Zorn, and Rep. Jason M. Sheppard. This proclamation was to honor her exceptional dedication to this and other roles she held in the community. Ms. Smith helped found or was involved with Court Appointed Special Advocates of Monroe County, Family Counseling and Shelter Services, the Bedford Community Foundation, and the BBA. The project she holds dearest was Heart of Hope, which helps Bedford Township area families who are facing high medical bills on behalf of their children.

Her honors also include receiving the Monroe County Liberty Bell award in 2002 as a result of her work with CASA, which assigns volunteers to look out for abused or neglected children whose cases are in the court system. The Soroptimist International of Monroe County honored her in 1996 with their Celebration of Women awards. She also received an appointment from then-Gov. John Engler to the Michigan Community Service Commission in 2002.

All that came about from someone who once thought she’d be a music teacher. The uniqueness of the Bedford Township community is what made someone like her find a niche in public service. Ideas are a dime a dozen. But to get an idea to fruition is a little harder, she said. In Bedford Township, she added, the community is small enough to know many people but big enough to get things done. It was truly an honor to meet & name our newest Pharmacy after this amazing lady!

Ms. Meg Smith is enjoying her golden years wintering in Arizona, where she has family.
